De Kock yes, Phehlukwayo no – Steyn picks his ‘isolation partner’

De Kock Steyn

Dale Steyn is back in South Africa, with his PSL stint done and dusted (for now), and is enjoying a well-earned rest. However, he isn’t spending his time fishing by the lake, or surfing on the waves like he usually does, but instead, is self-isolating like most others.

Cricketers spend hours with their teammates, bonding or (cribbing) over the smallest of things. But what happens if you’re stuck with a teammate while being quarantined?

In an interview with ESPNCricinfo, Steyn has admitted that he would “love to be in quarantine” with Quinton de Kock, whom he calls his favourite person in the world. Unsurprisingly, it’s a lot to do with their shared interest – fishing.

“If you walk into his [hotel] room, he’s either making flies for fishing or he is watching a fishing video or he is watching a cooking video. And when you are at his house, he’s doing the same stuff. I hate cooking, so it would be great if he was.

“Because then I could watch all the fishing videos that he’s watching, I could help him do all the tying, and he could cook all the food. He’s a proper cook. He loves being around a braai.”

On the flip side, Steyn would rather avoid being around all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo, especially if taste for music is the basis for picking. Steyn was quick to confess that their music interests do not really match.

“I guess just from a music point of view, maybe somebody like Andy Phehlukwayo. If I had to listen to the music that he listens to all day long, I might just go and say, I am coronavirus positive, lock me in some other quarantine.”

A quick glance of Steyn’s Instagram feed explains his love for fishing. Phehlukwayo clearly had no chance against de Kock!
