Watch: Six, four, out! Issy Wong dismisses Shafali Verma in dramatic, controversial start to WPL final

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: The WPL final got off to a chaotic start, with Shafali Verma striking consecutive boundaries off Issy Wong before a controversial full delivery led to her dismissal.

After compatriot Nat-Sciver Brunt bowled a tight opening over, conceding just 2 runs, Wong entered the attack, fresh off the back of her play-off hat-trick against UP Warriorz.

Her first delivery, a good-length delivery on leg stump, was clubbed over long-on by Shafali for six. The next delivery was wide of off stump, Shafali duly backing away to scythe a four through third man to take her runs for the tournament past 250.

On the back foot at the Brabourne Stadium, Wong looked to have lost all composure in hurling down a full toss to Shafali. The batter backed away once more but this time the ball only went skywards, Amelia Kerr wheeling around from point to take a composed catch.

The third umpire was consulted as the replays appeared to show the ball travelling over the stumps and above the waist of Shafali, but the wicket stood, much to the dismay of the Delhi Capitals camp.

Wong would bowl a similar delivery to Alice Capsey two balls later, the latter suffering the same fate as her team-mate after being caught by Amanjot Kaur.
