‘Get well soon from what?’ – Deandra Dottin says she is recovering from ‘nothing’ after being reportedly ruled out of WPL due to ‘medical reasons’

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Deandra Dottin, who was reportedly ruled out of WPL 2023 due to a “medical situation” and was replaced in Gujarat Giants by Kim Garth, has taken to social media to clarify that she is “recovering from nothing”.

The West Indies all-rounder, who had a base price of INR 50 lakh, was bought for INR 60 lakh (USD 73,000) by Gujarat Giants during the WPL auction last month. Dottin, who holds the record for the fastest century in Women’s T20Is, announced her international retirement in 2022, bringing to close a 14-year-old career.

Dottin last played a professional game in November 2022, when she turned out for Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League, ending the edition with 362 runs and 14 wickets. The 31-year-old was also the Player of the Match in the final as her all-round efforts (52* in 37 and 2-30) helped her side win by 10 runs.

On Friday, a day before the start of the WPL, ESPNCricinfo reported that Dottin had been ruled out due to a medical condition. However, Dottin took to social media to clarify. On Instagram, she replied to a story that linked to a different publication carrying the news of her absence.

“Get well soon from what if I may asked? (sic),” Dottin wrote.

She also took to Twitter to confirm that she was “recovering from nothing.”

“I really appreciate all the messages but truth be told I’m recovering from nothing but the Holy Ghost anointing thank you 🙏🏾 #GodIsGood #GodIsInControl”

Garth, who replaces Dottin in the squad, had not been bought by any of the five teams in the auction. She recently won the Women’s T20 World Cup with Australia, although she did not feature in any game.

Dottin played 143 ODIs and 127 T20Is, with the highlight being an unbeaten 112, which she scored in only 45 deliveries against South Africa in 2010.
