Watch: Amanda-Jade Wellington bowled an unplayable ball to Suzie Bates in the Women’s CPL on September 3, landing the ball outside leg stump and turning it sharply to beat the bat and clip the top of off and middle stumps.

Suzie Bates had put on a strong opening partnership for Guyana Amazon Warriors with New Zealand teammate Sophie Devine. They had reached 74-0 by the 10th over, Wellington’s third of the innings. To that point, Wellington had bowled with good control, her previous two overs conceding just 12 runs. But off the second ball of her third to Bates, she produced a magic delivery.

Wellington bowled a well flighted ball, pitching it up to making it land just outside the line of Bates’ leg stump. Bates went to tuck the ball off her pads into the leg side, but was surprised by sharp turn. The ball spun back past her outside edge, completely deceiving her, and hit the top of her middle and off stumps.

Bates stared back at Wellington in disbelief after the balls lit up, while Wellington grinned and high-fived her teammates. Several online commenters compared it to Shane Warne’s ‘ball of the century‘ to Mike Gatting.

Amazon Warriors went on to post 146-4 as Wellington returned figures of 1-21 from her four overs. Barbados Royals chased down the runs with four balls to spare: Wellington finished unbeaten on 15, having stabilised the chase after a late collapse.
