Watch: Run out off rebound – dubious WBBL dismissal becomes Laws of Cricket puzzler after bowler uproots stump

Amanda Jade Wellington controversially ran out Mignon du Preez in the WBBL

Watch: Mignon du Preez was controversially run out at the non-striker’s end by Amanda-Jade Wellington in a WBBL match in Adelaide today (October 29), sparking debate over ambiguity in the laws of the game.

Amanda-Jade Wellington was bowling to Georgia Voll in the sixth over of Brisbane Heat’s chase. Voll came down the wicket to a flighted delivery, looking play it down the ground. The ball ricocheted off non-striker Mignon du Preez, who was setting off to take a run, and trickled into the stumps. The bails were dislodged by the impact of the ball, which rolled towards Wellington.

Seeing the danger of a run out, du Preez turned back towards the non-striker’s end. Wellington picked up the ball and held it in her right hand while pulling a stump out of the ground with her left. She then knocked the ball against the stump which she had pulled out with du Preez still just short of the crease.

Wellington looked at the umpire in expectation, who gave it out on the field. There was no TV umpire for the game.

Law 29.2.1.5 says: “The wicket is broken fairly if a bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or a stump is struck out of the ground… by a fielder with his/her hand or arm, providing that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used.”

Law 29.2.1.6 then goes on to say: “The wicket is also broken fairly if a fielder strikes or pulls a stump out of the ground as in 29.2.1.5.”

This would suggest that once the wicket is broken and a fielder is required to remove a stump from the ground in order to break it again, the ball has to be in the same hand which removes the stump.

In Wellington’s case, the ball was in her other hand. However, the law is unclear given it does not explicitly state that the ball has to be in the same hand, but only refers to the previous Law.
