Watch: David Wiese team talk rips apart opposition tactics with data-driven analysis ahead of star PSL knockout performance

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: David Wiese is an integral member of Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, and his leadership skills were displayed during Eliminator 2 against Islamabad United when he gave a stirring speech backed with a concrete game-plan in the team huddle before proceedings began.

Lahore, who finished second on the points table, took on Islamabad United in Eliminator 2 after losing the Qualifier against Multan Sultans. Up ahead of the do-or-die clash, captain Shaheen Afridi gave a platform to experienced Wiese to lift the spirits of the players and give them a final talk. The all-rounder went on to remind the team of their strategy, explaining the “simple” tactic that they were to follow.

Addressing the bowlers, Wiese said, “These guys [Islamabad United batters] have the highest dot ball percentage, also have the highest boundary percentage. So their game plan is to come hard and hit boundaries. We limit their boundaries tonight, they’re not good runners between the wickets, so they’re not going to be pushing us for twos. We limit their boundaries, we squeeze the dots by bowling good, proper length balls.. Let them take the risks.

“Let’s not give them those easy boundaries. They target the first ball, the fifth ball and the sixth ball of the over. So you’re gonna be very strong starting the over and finishing the over. We limit the boundaries, we win the game. It’s simple.”

Batting first, Lahore managed to get 168-7 on the board, with Wiese starring for the side with an eight-ball 28*. In reply, Islamabad were dismissed for 162, with their innings containing 12 fours and six sixes.

Lahore went on to win PSL 2022, with Wiese scoring an identical innings of 28* from eight balls in the final. He ended the tournament with 168 runs in 11 innings, at a strike rate of 184.61, and also picked up nine wickets at an average of just over 27.
