Watch: New England ODI recruit Luke Wood stuns batter with vicious bumper that springs off length in T20 Blast

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Days after being named in the England ODI squad for the tour of Netherlands, Lancashire quick Luke Wood gave a glimpse of what can be expected of him, bowling a sharp bouncer in a 2022 T20 Blast clash.

Taking the new ball against Derbyshire, Wood, bowling over the wicket, troubled striker Luis Reece with an unexpected rising delivery. The length delivery continued climbing after pitching, got to Reece’s bat at waist height, and jumped higher following the impact but fell short of the close-in fielders. Reece eventually went on to score a 34-ball 55 in a run chase of 220.

The quick, however, was expensive thereafter, conceding 43 runs and picking up a wicket. Wood’s previous figures in the competition read 1-2, 1-24 and 2-36.

Wood has a T20 average of 27.26, which reduces to 25 in List A cricket. The left-armer had picked up 13 wickets in the 2021 T20 Blast and got his maiden call-up to the national team for the series against Netherlands beginning on June 17.
