Sunrisers Eastern Cape were 64-2 in the ninth over when captain Aiden Markram joined Tom Abell. They added 63 in 35 balls before Abell (60 in 44 balls) fell.
Tristan Stubbs made six off the first four balls he faced when Kieron Pollard bowled at him in the 17th over. The ball was pitched on a length on leg-stump, but Stubbs made no attempt to play in that direction.
Despite the leg-stump line, he reverse-slapped it over the off-side cordon of fielders for an exceptional six. He eventually fell for a 13-ball 23 and Markram for a 32-ball 52, but they helped the Eastern Cape amass 175-6 despite Kagiso Rabada’s 2-26 and Nuwan Thushara’s 2-32.
MI Cape Town’s chase was halted by a regular fall of wickets and some tight bowling from Daniel Worrall (1-32), Ottniel Baartman (2-24), and Liam Dawson (1-29). None of their batters went past 30.
Worrall had to defend 18 off the last over. He had Delano Potgieter out caught with his first ball, but George Linde hit a six and a four to keep Cape Town in the match. However, Worrall closed out the match in his last over (which also witnessed Pollard getting run out) to seal the game.
