Watch: In a crucial PSL 2024 playoff match on March 14, Peshawar Zalmi was awarded five penalty runs after a throw hit Mohammad Rizwan’s glove, which was lying on the ground.

The incident happened on the last ball of the 11th over of Zalmi’s innings. Tom Kohler-Cadmore played a paddle sweep against left-arm spinner Khushdil Shah. As the ball caressed through the fine leg, Multan captain Mohammad Rizwan, dashed from his wicketkeeping stance to retrieve the ball.

However, replays revealed that one of Rizwan’s gloves fell on the ground as he went to chase the ball, and the incoming throw hit it. At the non-striker’s end, Babar Azam pointed out the incident, leading to a discussion between Rizwan, his teammates and on-field umpire Aleem Dar.

After the discussion, Dar awarded five penalty runs to Peshawar Zalmi as the per Law 28.2.1.3, which states that a fielder “will be deemed to have fielded the ball illegally if, while the ball is in play he/she wilfully discards a piece of clothing, equipment or any other object which subsequently makes contact with the ball” and Law 28.2.3.

At the 2022 T20 World Cup, South Africa conceded five penalty runs in similar fashion to Zimbabwe when the ball hit a glove discarded by Quinton de Kock.

Fortunately, the mishap didn’t prove costly in the end, as Multan restricted Zalmi to 146-7 before gunning down the target in 18.3 overs with seven wickets left to reach the final.
