Naseem took two wickets during Islamabad United’s loss to Quetta Gladiators in the PSL today (February 22), keeping the former in the match until the end defending a low total. Having already taken the wicket of Saud Shakeel in his second over and having conceded 26 runs off the first three overs of his spell, Naseem came on to bowl his final over in the 16th. At that point, the Gladiators were 108-4 needing another 31 runs to win.
The first five balls of his over passed uneventfully, with a wide conceded off the final delivery meaning Naseem had to bowl it again. He didn’t waste the opportunity. Bowling from round the wicket, Naseem sent down an unplayable delivery, snaking the ball passed Rutherford’s outside edge and uprooting his off stump from the ground.
Rutherford stared back down the pitch in disbelief at the ball he had just been bowled, and saw Naseem jogging down towards him. Naseem had both arms outstretched in celebration and gave a brief send-off as he reached the batter. The wicket meant Naseem finished his spell with figures of 2-34, and that Rutherford had to depart for 29 off 23 balls.
Quetta Gladiators lost two more wickets in the following two overs, and at one point were seven down with another 12 still needed to complete the win. Mohammad Amir came in and hit two boundaries to seal the result, and give Quetta Gladiators their third consecutive win of the competition.
