Ayub, 20, hit his first six off Rauf’s first ball, picking the ball off a full length and scything over deep mid-wicket for a huge six. Even more impressive was that Ayub seemed to take his eyes off the ball whilst playing the shot, swinging powerfully with his head perfectly still over the ball.
The shot generated huge excitement on air. “Have a look at that, where’s the respect?” exclaimed the commentator before Nick Knight chipped in with “no respect, just fearless batting.”
As he walked back to the end of his run-up after the shot, Rauf gave a small nod towards the batter, raising his eyebrows, looking impressed.
When Ayub hit his next ball to the off-side for four, however, he looked less than impressed with himself as he walked back to his mark.
Ayub went on to score another fifty, bringing up the milestone off 26 balls with a slog-sweep for six off Rashid Khan. It has been quite a competition for Saim, who now sits joint second for the most fifties scored in the 2023 competition.
He was finally dismissed by Rashid for 68, looking for another big shot but edging a googly to Sam Billings behind the stumps. By the time he was dismissed, Zalmi had passed the hundred mark without loss at the halfway stage of their innings.
