Watch: ‘That could have gone horribly wrong’ – Multan Sultans fielder clings on to steepler despite Mohammad Rizwan diving into him full pelt

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Mohammad Rizwan narrowly avoided a nasty injury during a Pakistan Super League clash, but was all smiles after Shanawaz Dahani clung on to a swirling catch despite his captain diving into him full pelt.

Multan Sultans had set Peshawar Zalmi 183 to win on the back of a Shan Masood half-century, and their defence got off to a bright start with Zimbabwe quick Blessing Muzarabani striking twice in the second over. The first wicket, however, could have ended in disaster for the fielding side, with a miscommunication in calling seeing Rizwan and Dahani collide after Kamran Akmal top-edged.

Despite Rizwan practically rugby-tackling the fine-leg fielder, Dahani somehow clung on. There was a moment’s pause, with such incidents having caused serious injury in the past, but both players were back on their feet soon enough in celebration. At first, it appeared as if Rizwan wasn’t sure that the catch had been taken, but he saw the funny side as Dahani stretched out his arms with the ball in his grasp.

“Keeper wants it, keeper wants it, keeper, oooh,” said Pommie Mbangwa on air as Rizwan and Dahani collided. “Dahani has taken it in the end. And man, that could have gone horribly wrong.”

The rest of the match, as has the whole tournament, went horrible right for Multan Sultans, with Muzarabani and Khushdil Shah sharing six wickets in a comfortable 42-run win to extend their unbeaten start to the season to six games.
