Watch: Liam Dawson sealed the deal for his team Islamabad United with a six and a four in the last over of Eliminator 1 on Thursday, hitting the winning runs off his sometime Goatacre CC teammate Benny Howell during the Pakistan Super League clash against Peshawar Zalmi.
Chasing 170 for a win and spot in Eliminator 2, Islamabad United would have fancied their chances, with 10 needed off the last over. However, Howell picked up the wicket of Azam Khan with the first ball of the 20th over, sending him back for 28 off 22 with a knuckleball that beat the batter all ends up, hitting him plumb in front. Peshawar Zalmi, though, were unable to sustain the pressure as new batter Dawson ensured the match was over within the next two deliveries. Up against his club cricket teammate, Howell, Dawson first sent a slower delivery for a huge six over mid-wicket, and then scooped a full toss that stayed low for a four to fine leg to win the game for his side.
Dawson and Howell last played together for Goatacre CC in July 2018, against Frocester CC, when the latter scored 97 in 80 deliveries with three sixes and 14 fours. Dawson was only able to score five in his team’s total of 270-8. While Dawson’s Hampshire and England commitments mean that he last played for Goatacre CC in 2018, Howell, who is now largely a T20 specialist, played nine games for the club side in 2021.
Islamabad United will now play Eliminator 2 on Friday against Lahore Qalandars.
