Watch: No ball or not? – Tim David left unhappy after being caught off waist-high full-toss

Watch: Mumbai Indians’ Tim David was left dismayed after he was dismissed off a contentious above-waist-high full-toss, which was not deemed as a no-ball by the TV umpire during the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants today (May 24).

Batting on 13, David looked to finish off the innings on a high when he looked to thump a high full toss by Yash Thakur on the third ball of the 17th over, only to see Deepak Hooda latch onto a catch at long-on. As soon as the ball was bowled, the square-leg umpire immediately raise one hand to signal an above-waist-high no-ball but, soon after, decided to go up to the TV umpire instead.

Replays showed that the ball had slipped out of Thakur’s hands, and seemingly looked to be above the batter’s waist. According to IPL’s Playing Conditions clause 41.7.1, a no ball can be called when, “Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease, is to be deemed to be unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker.”

The Playing Conditions also define what will constitute an “above waist” delivery. “Waist height is defined as the point at which the top of the batter’s trousers would conventionally be when he is standing upright at the popping crease.”

The TV umpires ruled David out after watching the replays, saying that the batter was crouched and not standing in his upright position when the ball passed his waist. The batter was left dismayed at the decision, with Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher also seen having a conversation with third umpire Anil Choudhary between overs.

MI ended their innings on 182-8 in the must-win game.
