Watch: In the 1000th match in IPL history, Sandeep Sharma bowled Rohit Sharma with a slow knuckle-ball in Mumbai.

With a 62-ball 124, studded with 16 fours and eight sixes, Yashasvi Jaiswal as good as single-handedly carried Rajasthan Royals to 212-7 at the Wankhede Stadium after Sanju Samson opted to bat.

In response, hosts Mumbai Indians took 12 off the first over, bowled by Trent Boult. Rohit then got a run off the first ball from Sandeep, and got the strike back for the last ball of the over.

Rohit’s attempt to make room to play an ‘inside-out’ shot was probably predetermined. Sandeep bowled a knuckle-ball to take the pace off – a variation that Rohit did not read.

Already in position for the shot, Rohit could not make the necessary adjustments for the 111kph ball. Caught in two minds, all he could do was watch in horror as the ball went on to hit off stump and knock one bail off its groove.

Rohit walked back for a five-ball three, but Cam Green (44 in 26 balls), Suryakumar Yadav (55 in 29), Tilak Varma (29 not out in 21), and Tim David (45 not out in 14) helped Mumbai win with three balls to spare.

In the process, Mumbai also became the first team to successfully chase a total in excess of 200 in an IPL match in Wankhede Stadium. Sandeep finished with figures of 4-0-35-1.
