Watch: Liam Livingstone’s fighting 48-ball 94 went in vain as Punjab Kings lost their must-win clash against Delhi Capitals in a high-scoring thriller in IPL 2023 today (May 17).

Chasing 214 to stay alive in the competition, Punjab were dealt an early blow as they lost their skipper Shikhar Dhawan for no run in the second over of the innings. Prabhsimran Singh, who made a century in Punjab’s previous game, struggled to score 22 in 19 deliveries before he was dismissed by Axar Patel, bringing Livingstone to the crease.

A rescue act followed, with the England batter combining with Atharva Taide to stitch together a 78-run stand. However, the partnership could have ended much sooner had Anrich Nortje held onto a sitter when Livingstone was batting on three. He adopted a cautious approach thereafter as the PBKS batters looked to rebuild the innings, scoring 13 in his first 11 balls, and was given a life again on 22 when the DC fielders missed a run-out chance.

With the asking rate climbing, Livingstone switched gears, reaching his fifty in 29 deliveries even as wickets tumbled around him. From 128-2, PBKS were reduced to 180-7, but Livingstone continued playing the lone hand, keeping Punjab alive in the competition. However, it proved to be a tall task in the end as his side went down by 15 runs, with Livingstone getting dismissed in the last ball of the match, missing his first IPL hundred by six runs. His innings was laced with nine sixes and was scored at a strike rate of 195.83.
