Watch: In today’s (April 11) IPL 2023 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Suryakumar Yadav not only dropped Axar Patel but somehow ‘headed’ the ball over the boundary for six.

Asked to bat by Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma, Delhi Capitals were left reeling at 98-5 after 12.3 overs when Axar joined his captain, a struggling David Warner.

Axar began cautiously, scoring six off the first seven balls he faced before lofting off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen for consecutive sixes. Yadav, stationed on the wide long-off boundary, sprinted in for the second shot instead of staying put, only to see the ball soar over his head.

In the 17th over, Axar hit a slower ball from Jason Behrendorff for six over long-on. He hit the second ball to long-on as well, where Yadav had been fielding. Yadav cupped his hands, but the ball burst through his fingers, bounced off his face, and somehow cleared the ropes.

The ball “crashed through his hands,” quipped Harsha Bhogle on air.

Axar soon went overtook Warner, reaching his fifty in 22 balls. He finally fell for 54 in 24 balls. Warner (51 in 47) followed two balls later, and Delhi folded for 172.

At the time of writing, Mumbai are 121-1 in 14.1 overs, with Rohit Sharma on 60 and Tilak Varma on 24.
