Watch: Little-known 22-year-old Nehal Wadhera announced himself in style on his Indian Premier League – and T20 – debut today (April 2), launching Karn Sharma out of the stadium for a 101-metre six.
The leg-spinning all-rounder was picked up for his base price of INR 20 lakhs by Mumbai Indians at the 2023 IPL auction, and made the XI for their first game, against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
He had never played a top-level T20 game before, with five first-class caps to his name before today. He came to the crease with Mumbai Indians in trouble at 48-4, but helped to arrest the slide with his part in a 50-run stand, the milestone brought up in under five overs.
The highlight was undoubtedly his demolition of former India Test spinner Sharma, with the second six slammed high and mighty out of the Chinaswamy Stadium for a 101-metre six. Sharma struck back, Wadhera offering a catch to Virat Kohli next ball, but a statement had been made.
