Chennai Super Kings quick Tushar Deshpande has posted an Instagram story to expose multiple fake posts circulating on social media, wrongly attributing a demeaning quote about India and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma to him.
Gujarat Titans are favourites to retain their IPL title with our Match Centre partners bet365. To bet on the outright market of the competition head here.
Deshpande was part of the CSK team that cruised past Mumbai Indians in their much-hyped IPL 2023 fixture last week. The seamer gave Chennai their first breakthrough, cleaning up Rohit Sharma in the fourth over, returning later to claim Tim David as well. CSK won by seven wickets.
On Sunday, Deshpande shared a story on his Instagram account that contained a collage of various social media posts, quoting him for reportedly saying: “Taking Rohit Sharma’s wicket is so easy. He is not someone like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers”.
Sharing the collage with a “Fake” sign, Deshpande wrote: “I have absolute respect for all the legends mentioned above. I did not, would not make any such demeaning statements. stop spreading fake news (sic)”.
It’s not the first time that a fake quote from a player has done the rounds on social media. Last year, a quote attributed to Nasser Hussain in the aftermath of the India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match went viral, only for the former England captain to come out and deny he had said it.
The Deshpande incident is another reminder that social media can be a hub for misinformation and rumours, and not everything you see or hear is true.
