Soon after the end of the 2022 T20 World Cup, the focus has shifted to the IPL 2023 auction, before which each team will announce their set of retentions and releases and trades. The trade window is open until November 15, 2022 – here’s the latest news and updates regarding teams in the Indian Premier League.

IPL 2023 trade news: Latest updates

Five-time defending champions Mumbai Indians acquired the services of Jason Behrendorff in a trade deal with Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Australia quick was bought by Faf du Plessis’ team in 2022 for INR 75 lakhs but did not get any game time.

Behrendorff was with Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2021 but warmed the benches for four years, and only got an opportunity to play in 2019.

Kolkata Knight Riders were the most active team in the trading window, getting Shardul Thakur from Delhi Capitals and the duo of Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz from this year’s IPL winners Gujarat Titans. Thakur was initially with Chennai Super Kings before he was picked up by Delhi Capitals in the auction last year. In an all-cash deal, the two-time champions shelled out INR 10.75 crore for Thakur. Ferguson, on the other hand, makes a comeback to Kolkata Knight Riders, having been associated with the team from 2019 to 2021.

Sam Billings has already pulled out of IPL 2023 to focus on Test cricket and is likely to be released by Kolkata Knight Riders. According to reports, Pat Cummins will also be released, having decided against playing in the 2023 season due to the Ashes.

Gujarat Titans were also expected to release Matthew Wade, but have held onto his services, according to Sportstar. Wade played ten games for the team in 2022, making 157 runs at a strike rate of under 114.

There are unconfirmed reports that Lucknow Super Giants are looking to release Jason Holder. The former West Indies captain, Holder was bought by the franchise for INR 8.75 crore.

Abdul Samad is likely to stay on with Sunrisers Hyderabad despite not getting enough matches in the 2022 season. The team had retained the Jammu and Kashmir hitter for the last season but gave him only two games. Reportedly, Samad was much sought after in the trading window, with Lucknow Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals both interested in getting the services of the player. However, he stays on with his former franchise.

Royal Challengers Bangalore are releasing Siddarth Kaul and David Willey, while Chennai Super Kings are all set to let go of the services of Chris Jordan. Willey and Jordan were both members of England’s T20 World Cup-winning team and won’t be a part of the IPL 2023 retentions list.

Another member of the side, Adil Rashid will reportedly register his name in the 2023 IPL auctions. The leg-spinner made his debut in the tournament last year, but played one game, and was not picked by any team this year. While Rashid might make a comeback to the league, Mitchell Starc, who has not played in the IPL since 2015 is expected to give the edition a miss, keeping in mind Australia’s hectic schedule next year.
