The Narendra Modi Stadium, formerly called the Motera Stadium, in Ahmedabad, will host the final of the 2023 Indian Premier League — here’s all you need to know about the venue, including seating capacity and history ahead of the IPL summit clash.

Narendra Modi Stadium: History

The stadium is currently the largest in the world, with a seating capacity of 132,000 spectators. Located in the Gujarat city of Ahmedabad, it was initially known as the Motera Stadium and was constructed in 1983. It regularly held international matches until 2015, before it was completely shut down and rebuilt with world-class infrastructure and facilities.

It was reopened and inaugurated in 2021 by the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, after whom the stadium is also named. Modi was the chief minister of the state from 2001 to 2014, and was also the president of the Gujarat Cricket Association for six years from 2009.

According to reports, the estimated cost of rebuilding the stadium was approximately INR 800 crore or USD 100 million.

The Narendra Modi stadium also hosted the 2022 IPL, which saw an attendance of 101,566 spectators, thus making it to the Guiness Book of World Record for having the highest recorded match attendance.

Narendra Modi Stadium: Past records and stats

A total of 15 Tests have been played here. The first five-day game that was hosted here was between India and West Indies in 1983. Since it was reopened in 2021, three Tests have been played here. It also held a day-night Test match in 2021 between India and England.

26 ODIs and seven T20Is have also been held at the Motera.

Over the years, a number of records have been created and broken here. Sunil Gavaskar became the first batter to score 10,000 runs in Tests in this stadium in 1987, against Pakistan.

Kapil Dev also had a memorable outing at this ground in 1995, when he picked up his 432nd Test wicket to become the highest wicket-taker in the world, breaking Richard Hadlee’s record.

Sachin Tendulkar also scored his 18,000th ODI run at this venue, getting to the feat against Australia in the quarterfinal of the 2011 ODI World Cup.

IPL 2023

The stadium is the home ground of Gujarat Titans, the defending champions of IPL. It is hosting the Qualifier 2 between Mumbai Indians and the Titans, as well as the final.
