IPL 2023 starts on March 31 with the Gujarat Titans hoping to defend their title. Several greats of the game have dominated the Indian Premier League since the inaugural season in 2008 – here’s the list of highest run scorers of each season (Orange Cap winners) as well as the leading run-getters of all time.

IPL: Top 10 run-scorers in Indian Premier League

Virat Kohli (RCB): 6,624 runs, 129.14 strike rate
Kohli tops the list of run scorers in the IPL, having represented RCB in every edition of the tournament. Despite a poor season last season by his high standards, the T20 World Cup indicated he might be back to his best in the shortest format.

Shikhar Dhawan (DC, DC, DD, MI, PKBS, SH): 6,244 runs, 126.34 SR
The left-hander, one of the most solid and dependable openers, is an IPL great and has the most fours in the tournament’s history (701).

David Warner (DC, DD, SH): 5,881 runs, 140.69 SR
The gritty Australian has won the  Orange Cap three times and will captain the Delhi Capitals in the absence of Rishabh Pant this season. He will be hoping to prove some doubters wrong as his place in the Australian team comes under some scrutiny.

Rohit Sharma (DC, MI): 5,879 runs, 129.89 SR
India and Mumbai Indians captain is next on the list. The captain with the most IPL titles, Rohit has batted primarily as opener, but has also moved down the order at times.

Suresh Raina (CSK, GL): 5,528 runs, 136.73
One of the greatest in the tournament, Raina has been called Mr. IPL by his fans, and served as MS Dhoni’s deputy at CSK for years. The left-hander announced his retirement from IPL in September 2022.

AB de Villiers (DD, RCB): 5,162 runs, 151.68 SR
Starting with Delhi Daredevils, before enjoying sustained success with RCB, Mr 360 lit up the IPL on several occasions and importantly has the highest strike rate amongst the top ten run scorers.

MS Dhoni (CSK, RPS): 4,978 runs, 135.19 SR
The beloved former Indian captain is still going strong at 41 and will lead the Chennai Super Kings again this year after briefly handing over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja at the start of the last campaign.

Chris Gayle (KXIP, KKR, PKBS, RCB): 4,965 runs, 148.96 SR
Arguably the greatest T20 batter ever. Gayle holds the record for the highest-ever IPL score, a staggering 175 off just 66 balls for RCB in 2013.

Robin Uthappa (CSK, KKR, MI, PW, RR, RCB): 4,952 runs, 130.35 SR
Uthappa retired from IPL cricket at the end of last season after a couple of seasons at CSK but will be remembered most for his partnerships at the top of the order at KKR with Gautam Gambhir.

Dinesh Karthik (DD, GL, KXIP, KKR, MI, RCB): 4,376 runs, 132.64 SR
The wicket-keeper batter is lethal at the death and showed this in abundance last season, fuelled by a desire to represent his country at the World Cup, he struck 330 runs at a strike rate of 183.33 to successfully earn a recall.

Orange Cap List (2008-2022)

2008: Shaun Marsh (KXIP) – 616 runs
2009: Matthew Hayden (CSK) – 572 runs
