A last ball no ball, a dropped catch and missed yorkers – how SRH hauled down 41 from 12 to stun RR

by Wisden Staff 4 minute read

Sunrisers Hyderabad stunned Rajasthan Royals, hauling down 41 runs off the final two overs to chase 215 and stun Rajasthan Royals at Jaipur.

With 41 required from the final two overs it felt as if Rajasthan Royals had the game in the bag but a chaotic series of events saw Sunrisers steal the unlikeliest of victories to lift them off the bottom of the table.

Rajasthan captain Sanju Samson threw the ball to Kuldip Yadav for the penultimate over the contest. Kuldip started the over poorly, missing two yorkers in two balls to Glenn Phillips with the New Zealander depositing both full tosses into the stands. Suddenly, the equation was down to a more manageable but still unlikely 29 off 10.

Kuldip then abandoned his yorker ploy, this time deciding to offer up a slower delivery. The thinking might have been different but the result was the same as Phillips smashed the over’s third ball over mid-wicket for six more.

A thick edge off a wide delivery brought Phillips four more to give Sunrisers 22 runs off the first four deliveries of the over – they now needed 19 from eight. Phillips was gone next ball with Shimron Hetmyer taking an excellent catch in the deep before Marco Jansen took two off his first ball at the crease, yet another missed yorker from Kuldip, his third such delivery of the over. In total, Kuldip’s over cost his side 24 runs.

Sandeep Sharma was entrusted with defending 17 runs from the final over and he should have claimed the wicket of Abdul Samad with his first delivery as Impact Player Obed McCoy dropped a routine chance at short third man off which Samad and Jansen ran two. The drama ramped up to another level the following ball as Samad smoked a straight six that IPL debutant Joe Root only just failed to claw back into the playing area from long on. Sunrisers now only needed nine from four balls.

Undeterred by his teammate’s failed attempts at executing the yorker, Sandeep fired in another to Samad and this time nailed it but Samad was still able to take come back for two. Sandeep fired in another attempted yorker offering up another full toss which Samad himself failed to get hold of. He picked up a single leaving Jansen on strike with six needed from two balls.

Sandeep then bowled yet another missed yorker but wasn’t punished by Jansen who took a single leaving Samad effectively needing a six off the final ball to win the game or a four to force through a Super Over. Samad holed out to long off off what ought to have been the final delivery of the match but just as the Royals started their celebrations the dreaded no-ball siren sounded around the ground. Sandeep had overstepped and would have to bowl the final ball again with the target reduced to four runs off one ball.

Amid the chaos Samad remained calm and hit the re-bowled final delivery – another attempted yorker that didn’t land quite where Sandeep intended – into the stands for six. Having needed 41 off 12, Sunrisers were now victorious much to Rajasthan’s dismay.
