Watch: Dewald Brevis set IPL 2022 on fire on Wednesday, hitting four successive sixes, including a huge 112-metre six during Mumbai India’s clash with Punjab Kings.
Brevis grabbed headlines with his astonishing strokeplay during the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, where he scored 506 runs at an average of 84.33 in six innings. The South Africa batter smashed two centuries and three fifties in the competition, with his big-hitting earning him the title of “Baby AB”. The youngster was much sought after in the IPL 2022 auctions that followed and eventually went to five-time champions Mumbai Indians for INR 3 crore.
The 18-year-old had a fine start to the season, scoring 29 off 19 in his maiden IPL innings against Kolkata Knight Riders. He has also displayed his bowling skills, and dismissed Virat Kohli off the very first delivery he sent down in the competition.
Against Punjab Kings on Wednesday, Brevis, unleashed his full fury, taking apart Rahul Chahar for 28 runs in the ninth over, including hitting four successive sixes along with a four. The first ball of the over was sent down to Tilak Verma, who took a single to get Brevis on strike. The second delivery was powered past the bowler for a boundary, after which Brevis took the aerial route.
The next ball was launched over long-on for a big six, which left even Punjab skipper Mayank Agarwal in awe. The fourth ball of the over saw Brevis go down on his knees as he smashed a big 102-metre maximum over wide long-on.
Chahar tried to bowl a seam up quicker delivery next, but the South African went back in his crease and smashed it over deep midwicket for three sixes in a row. The last maximum was the biggest of the list: a loopy delivery was clubbed away over long-on for a mammoth 112-metre hit, the biggest of the season thus far.
Brevis was dismissed for a 25-ball 49, falling short of his maiden IPL fifty as he attempted a pull shot off a shorter delivery by Odean Smith and ended up miscuing to Arshdeep Singh at deep backward square leg.
