With the IPL 2022 upon us, we take a look at how the new jersey of each ten Indian Premier League teams rank.

The unveiling of the IPL jersey before every season is much awaited, with fans thronging all possible places for their favourite team’s apparel, be it originals or replicas.

Ahead of the 15th edition, we take a look at the overall look and feel of the new kit of the teams.

IPL 2022 jersey: Rating the kits of the teams

Royal Challengers Bangalore [RCB]: 8.5/10

Yet again, RCB have absolutely aced their jersey, with the bright red, black and white standing out. The minimalistic presence of sponsor logos gives it a refreshing look, though we’d have liked the font size of the principal sponsors to be smaller. The golden goes well with the overall look, and we love the imprinted lion, which is subtle yet bold.

Gujarat Titans: 8/10

Debutants Gujarat Titans did not disappoint despite choosing the safe blue for their jersey. The shades of light blue go well in contrast and the design is neat, giving it a good look overall. The jersey seems to have made up for the rather uninspiring logo.

Delhi Capitals [DC]: 7.5/10

Delhi had a predominant blue jersey last year, which now has an equal blend of red as well, making it very similar to England’s white-ball jersey. It indicates aggression and composure, while the roaring tiger towards the bottom of the kit indicates fearlessness. The back has tiger strips around them, as Delhi have chosen to go back to their original colours.

Mumbai Indians [MI] – 6/10

Mumbai Indians’ new jersey has something refreshing this time, with different shades of blues merged together towards the bottom. However, the touch of gold towards the bottom adds richness and the sponsor logos, printed in white, prevents it from being too gaudy, something the other teams have been guilty of.

Lucknow Super Giants [LSG] – 5.5/10

It took some time, but Lucknow Super Giants revealed their light blue-ish green hue ahead of their maiden IPL. The minty shade might be difficult to spot in day games, and the lack of other colours (there’s a hint of orange) makes it a tad jarring, at least in pictures.

Rajasthan Royals [RR]: 5/10

The only side with a pink jersey, RR’s design for 2022 is inspired by the Rajasthani design called Lehraiya (waves) and indicates the winds blowing across the deserts of the state. The tie-and-dye patterns used are almost 5,000 years old, and it is encouraging to see the franchise adopt the traditions of their state into their jersey. However, the haphazard placing of the sponsor logo along with the background in green forces us to deduct marks.

Chennai Super Kings [CSK]: 4.5/10

Chennai Super Kings have stuck to their traditional yellow and blue with a lion on the bottom left side, and the hard-to-ignore camouflage stripes on the shoulder. They have experimented the least with their jersey in the IPL, and while it is still impressive, it has now become a touch monotonous.

Kolkata Knight Riders [KKR]: 3.5/10

The only team with a purple jersey, the choice of the yellow shade in their jersey is in-your-face. Even the purple is a shade lighter than last year’s, and we aren’t the biggest fans of the sponsor logos on the yellow background. KKR had one of the best jerseys initially, with their choice of black and gold, but they switched to purple from 2011. The dark purple with golden was a hit too, but replacing the tinge with yellow and lightening the royal purple doesn’t interest us. The spiral dots at the bottom are too many, giving it a clustered look.

Punjab Kings [PBKS]: 3/10

The Punjab Kings jersey seems lacklustre, almost like their on-field performances of late. Too many sponsor logos of different colours give it an unpleasing finish, and the lion at the bottom of the jersey is barely visible. We’d have liked some more style.

Sunrisers Hyderabad [SRH]: 2.5/10

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s jersey was a nice change in the previous seasons, with the bright orange perfectly contrasted with the black. They have reduced the black in their kit for 2022 and the players are at risk of looking like Fanta bottles, with orange pants and an orange helmet to go with it!
