IPL 2021, the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League, is expected to begin next month: here’s a look at the Rajasthan Royals (RR), as the franchise looks to better their 2020 showing where they finished last in the points table.

RR finished bottom of the 2020 competition but remained in the hunt for a play-off spot until the dying stages of the group phase. In the end, despite finishing last, they came just two points behind Sunrisers Hyderabad in third place. In 2021, after a change in captaincy and a change in head coach, they’ll be hoping to improve sufficiently so as to secure that elusive play-off spot.

Sanju Samson has been entrusted with the captaincy after Steve Smith’s release from the franchise prior to this year’s mini-auction. RR attracted headlines from the auction after signing South African quick for an all-time record IPL fee. Morris, who endured a quietly impressive tournament in 2020 for Royal Challengers Bangalore, will give Jofra Archer much-needed support in the pace attack and some extra fire power down the order, in a side that has generally been overly reliant on a small group of players in its recent past.

The Royals retained Yashasvi Jaiswal and Kartik Tyagi, two of India’s stars at last year’s U19 World Cup but who struggled in their maiden IPLs. RR will be hoping that after a season of acclimatisation, the pair will be better equipped to succeed this time round. Rahul Tewatia, one of the breakout stars of the 2020 competition, remains with the franchise.
