Each team plays the remaining teams twice in the league stage, collecting two points every match for every win and zero for a loss.

The playoffs and the final will be held at the newly-built Narendra Modi Stadium at Motera in Ahmedabad. There are eleven doubleheaders in the season with the matches set to begin from 3.30pm IST, starting with the first one on April 18. The night games begin at 7.30pm IST.
The league phase has 56 matches as usual with each franchise playing in four of the six venues. The first 36 matches in the season will happen across Chennai, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Delhi alone. Over the second half of the league phase, the action shifts to Bengaluru and Kolkata.

The 14th edition of the tournament, IPL 2021, has the usual eight teams with the top four in the points table after the league phase to qualify for the play-offs. The qualifier will have the first and second playing each other with the winner sent through to the final.
The third and fourth teams play the eliminator with the loser eliminated from the tournament. The winner of the eliminator and the losing team in the qualifier play the second eliminator and the winners will face the winners from the first qualifier in the finals.
