IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians (MI) team preview, fixtures & squad list – Indian Premier League

IPL points table
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

IPL 2021, the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League, is expected to begin next month: here’s a look at the Mumbai Indians (MI), as they look to defend their record fifth crown which they won at the 2020 Indian Premier League.

MI were at their best under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, claiming a clinical victory over a young Delhi Daredevils side in the 2020 final. They finished on top of the points table after the league stage, winning nine out of 14 games. Mumbai hadn’t won an IPL trophy until the 2012 edition and since then, have claimed five titles in eight years.

In 2021, they remain the team to beat in the competition.

IPL 2021 Mumbai Indians team preview

Mumbai Indians brought in the experienced Piyush Chawla in the mini-auction ahead of the 2021 edition. The wrist-spinner has been a prolific yet underrated player in the tournament – he’s the third-highest wicket-taker in the history of the IPL. Overseas seam options like Adam Milne, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jimmy Neesham were also brought in to add to Mumbai’s impressive bowling unit.

While Mumbai made smart buys at the auction, their squad before the event looked incredible on its own. With players like Rohit, Quinton de Kock, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah as their marquee names, MI have one of the most complete squads in the tournament.

While other teams have made significant buys ahead of IPL 2021, Mumbai Indians will still go into the competition as one of the favourites to win it. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where this team won’t make the playoffs at the very least.
