‘All he does is get smacked about’ – McClenaghan likes slew of anti-Neesham tweets

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Former Mumbai Indians and New Zealand quick Mitchell McClenaghan has caused a stir by ‘liking’ a string of highly critical tweets about Jimmy Neesham, who made his Mumbai Indians debut recently.

The all-rounder struggled, conceding 26 runs in two overs and falling for a golden duck against Chennai Super Kings, and his former teammate made his opinion clear. Tweets liked included “Jimmy Neesham proving he should probably stay on the bench and tweet”, “how is Neesham considered a semi-decent bowling option in 2021 man, all he does is get smacked about”, and two stating that Australia’s Nathan Coulter-Nile would have been a better option than Neesham.

McClenaghan also responded when someone suggested Neesham was a better cricketer than him.

However, Neesham also replied “No” when asked if he “hated” Neesham, and that Neesham was “there to bat support Hardik and Pollard – give them confidence someone is behind them”.

When sent a screenshot of McClenaghan’s likes, Neesham, celebrated for his quick wit on the micro-blogging platform, simply replied “Lol.”

If the intent of including was just to give Pollard confidence, then Neesham succeeded. The West Indian played one of the all-time great IPL innings to seal a chase of 220.

McClenaghan last played for New Zealand in 2018, and for Mumbai Indians in 2019.
