Organisers of the Caribbean Premier League, the domestic T20 competition held in the islands every year, are hopeful that CPL 2020 will go ahead as per schedule, amid the alarming spread of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Established in 2013, this year would be the eighth season of the CPL. The tournament, which is set to be held from August 19 to September 26, hosts top players from across the world.

On March 23, the same day Grenada recorded its first coronavirus case, CPL organisers put out a statement, clarifying that there has been no call yet on moving the schedule to a later date, deeming it “too early”.
“CPL has been in constant communication with our medical advisors in recent weeks, as well as speaking with Cricket West Indies about the current situation with regard to cricket around the world, and at present, there has been no discussion about moving the event,” the organisers said in a statement.

“CPL believes it is too early to make such a decision, but this is an evolving situation and we are carefully watching how events unfold in the Caribbean and around the world.”

With almost all mainstream cricket postponed, CPL organisers said that they would eye alternative options for the schedule, if the situation does not subside in the coming few months.
“Our thoughts at this time are with the many CPL fans, players and staff from around the world who have been impacted by this crisis,” the statement said, “and we hope that they and their families stay safe and healthy.”
