David Warner lands in a helicopter at SCG for BBL game
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: In one of the most bizarre player entries ever seen on a cricket field, a helicopter carrying David Warner landed on the Sydney Cricket Ground outfield to participate in the Big Bash League.

Warner has been gathering headlines through the month as he bade farewell to Test cricket, but nothing can top his much-talked-about entry into the BBL to play the Sydney Smash, turning the SCG into a helipad.

Warner’s movie-style entry was necessitated due to his presence at his brother’s wedding in Hunter Valley on Friday. From the ceremony, Warner dashed to the Cessnock airport, taking the 45-minute ride, before having the heli descend into the SCG’s famed turf.

Before the SCG was finalised, there were reports that the helicopter could land in Allianz Stadium, adjacent to the SCG. But the SCG remained top priority, and was accomplished when Warner managed to land before the broadcasters set up their arrangements for the Sydney Thunder v Sydney Stars game.

Warner’s little stunt might not be enough for the Thunders to qualify for the BBL finals. They need to win their remaining three games, and then hope for certain results to go their way.

Thunders are currently seventh out of eight on the points table, with one win in seven games.
