Watch: ‘Village cricket’ – Stevie Eskinazi’s lazy walk back leads to comical run out in BBL final

BBL run out final
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Stevie Eskinazi was dismissed in bizarre fashion after a lazy attempt to return to the crease led to a run out during the BBL 2022/23 final between Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers.

In the fifth over of the Scorchers’ innings, a delivery from James Bazley struck Eskinazi on the body, with the batters quickly exchanging ends for a leg bye. It should have been an easy single, but Eskinazi’s lethargic attempt to reach the crease was capitalised by Max Bryant, who fired in a throw from backward point. Eskinazi didn’t realise a throw was coming his way, and barely attempted to get his bat in in time. The direct hit left him just outside the crease.

Expectedly, the Perth home crowd weren’t impressed by Eskinazi’s half-attempt to reach the crease. There was chatter on social media too: the official BBL channel shared the clip with the caption “caught snoozing”, while ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentary called it “village cricket”.
