Watch: Matthew Wade gets out, kicks bat in frustration, gets banned for one BBL game for ‘abuse of cricket equipment’

Matthew Wade, banned from Hobart Hurricanes' latest BBL game, kicks his bat as he walks off following a dismissal against Sydney Sixers

Watch: Matthew Wade has been banned for one Big Bash League game, accumulating three demerit points in an 18-month period.

According to Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct Registers, he had just one demerit point heading into Hobart Hurricanes’ most recent BBL game, for an audible obscenity in a game against Sydney Sixers in December 2021. Reports state that he has now received three penalty points, with additional infractions for another audible obscenity and for abuse of cricket equipment.

It would appear the latter charge relates to his reaction after being dismissed for 15 in Hobart Hurricanes’ loss, also against Sydney Sixers. He top-edged Todd Murphy to Jordan Silk at mid-wicket, and drop-kicked his bat as he walked off.

Wade was replaced in the XI by Tim Paine, playing his first BBL game in almost five years, since early 2018. In that time he has been made Australia Test captain following the Sandpapergate scandal, lost a home Test series to India, defended the Ashes away from home, and suffered his own ignominious exit from the captaincy after an investigation into sexual harassment claims came to light.

Paine made 10 off 12 and claimed three dismissals behind the stumps in an eight-run win over Melbourne Renegades.
