Big Bash League 2022, draft: All you need to know including date, star players and format

BBL 2022 draft
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

The Big Bash League (BBL) have introduced an Overseas Player Draft for the first time on August 28, 2022 — here is all you need to know, including the players available, the date and the format.

The last 11 seasons of the BBL had seen teams ink deals with players and their agents directly. That is all set to change in the 2022/23 edition, as all interested overseas players will have to enter a draft, where they will be assigned salary caps. Franchises will then take turns to pick cricketers in their squad. The contract will be valid for a year, and an overseas player will have to re-enter the draft if they want to play in the BBL in 2023/24. However, teams will have the option of retaining a player.

Format of the draft

The draft will have four rounds, where each franchise can pick a minimum of two players and a maximum of three players. After the second round, the team that picked last in round two will get the first pick from round three. Each team is allowed a maximum of three overseas players in their XI.

When will the BBL 2022 draft be held and where will it be telecast?

The draft for the 12th edition of the BBL will be held on August 28, after Australia’s ODI against Zimbabwe. The draft will be shown live on Foxtel and Kayo Sports.

Melbourne Renegades will pick first, followed by Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat. Sydney Sixers, Adelaide Strikers, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes will be the order for the picks.

Who are the platinum players?

The platinum players will be paid approximately USD 233,853 irrespective of how many games they play in the upcoming season. The BBL have assigned ‘Platinum’ status to 12 international players: Faf du Plessis, Jason Roy, Liam Livingstone, Sam Billings, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, David Willey, Shadab Khan, Dwayne Bravo, Rashid Khan, Chris Jordan, and Trent Boult.

Of the above, Billings (Sydney Thunder), Russell (Melbourne Stars), Shadab (Sydney Sixers), Jordan (Sydney Sixers) and Rashid (Adelaide Strikers) can be retained by the clubs they played for last year. Each team can, however, retain only one player.

The platinum players will be up for selection in the first round of the draft. Each team has a salary cap of USD 1.9m for their squad of 18 players.
