The Big Bash League 2020/21, the 10th edition of BBL, starts on December 10 – here’s the team captain list for the tournament.
The T20 tournament, featuring top players from Australia and around the world, consists of eight teams: Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder.
You can check the complete list of squads for each team here, while the full schedule and list of fixtures can be found here.
With the ongoing India tour of Australia, most of the first-choice captains are likely to be replaced with interim skippers.
Here’s the complete list of captains in the BBL.
Adelaide Strikers: Travis Head
The Australia batsman will continue as Adelaide Strikers BBL captain, a role he took as a 23-year-old from Brad Hodge in 2017. Head will be leading the side under the tutelage of coach Jason Gillespie and will have a bigger role to play after veteran all-rounder Cameron White’s retirement.
Brisbane Heat: Chris Lynn
The big-hitting batsman might not have added to his international caps since 2018, but will continue to lead the Heat. He’s captained the side in 38 games since 2015, the third-most by any skipper in BBL.
Hobart Hurricanes: Matthew Wade
The Australia wicketkeeper-batsman will continue to be the captain of Hobart Hurricanes, a team that is yet to win a BBL title. Wade, who has been playing in T20s since 2009, has been leading the Hurricanes since 2018. Peter Handscomb will preside over captaincy duties for the start of the tournament while Wade is away on international duty.
Melbourne Renegades: Aaron Finch
Aaron Finch, the Australia white-ball captain, will be leading the Renegades BBL team for the ninth year now. Under him, Renegades have won exactly half (27 out of 56 matches) and will be looking for a change of fortunes after their bottom-placed finish last season.
Melbourne Stars: Glenn Maxwell
Captain of Cricket Australia’s Team of the 2019/20 BBL season, Maxwell will be leading the Stars who have lost a few of their prominent overseas players this time, either to transfer or pre-season withdrawal. Runners-up for the last two seasons, the team will be itching to clinch their maiden title this time.
Perth Scorchers: Mitchell Marsh
Mitchell Marsh, who missed most of IPL 2020 due to an ankle injury, will be captain of the Perth Scorchers team for this season. Under him, Scorchers have had a poor record, winning just six out of 20 games. With some stellar inclusions this year, Marsh will be hoping to change that trend. Marsh is in a race to regain fitness ahead of the start of the tournament following an injury he picked up at the beginning of this year’s IPL.
Sydney Sixers: Moises Henriques
Captain of the defending champions, Moises Henriques is also the player with the most matches as captain in the BBL, having led the side in 58 games since 2013. This year, the squad looks even stronger with a number of notable inclusions and they will be aiming for their second title in consecutive years.
Sydney Thunder: Callum Ferguson
Ferguson, who announced his retirement from first-class cricket last month, will be leading Sydney Thunder, who finished third in the BBL last season. A settled batting order looks even stronger with the inclusion of Alex Hales and Sam Billings, which makes them a formidable side who are in search of their second BBL title.
