Watch: Shakib Al Hasan gets in argument with umpire after uncalled wide in Bangladesh Premier League

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Shakib Al Hasan could not hide his frustration at an uncalled wide, engaging in an angry argument with the square-leg umpire.

Playing for Fortune Barishal against Sylhet Strikers, Shakib was batting on 39 off 22 against Rejaur Rahman Raja when a short ball looped over his head on its way through to the keeper, with the all-rounder pulling out of his attempted stroke.

Shakib looked round, expecting a wide or no-ball signal from the umpire, but only receiving an indication that the delivery had been called as one legal bouncer for the over. The all-rounder yelled “hey” several times, with the stump mic capturing his annoyance, before he marched toward the square-leg umpire.

He entered into a conversation with the official from a distance, before walking even closer and gesturing that he felt the ball had passed a long way above his head. It took Sylhet Strikers wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim to intervene and put an end to the debate, guiding Shakib back to his crease.

Seemingly spurred on by the grievance, Shakib proceeded to smash five of his next six deliveries for four or six, ending up on 67 off 32. However, despite helping Fortune Barishal to 194-7, Sylhet Strikers came out on top, winning by six wickets with an over to spare.

Shakib has form for responding angrily to umpiring decisions in domestic cricket. In the Dhaka Premier League in 2021, he copped a ban for kicking and ripping the stumps out of the ground after an lbw appeal was turned down.
