The England team found out Peter Moores had been sacked as England head coach on the way to the ground for what would end up as his last game in charge.
Moores was axed from the England job following a string of disappointing results, most notably crashing out of the 2015 Cricket World Cup at the group stages, but also a 1-1 Test series draw against a West Indies side described as “mediocre” by former ECB chairman Colin Graves.
Moores’ final match was a lowkey ODI against Ireland in Dublin in which only 18 overs were possible due to rain, and rumours that he was facing the chop began to circulate while the game was in progress.
As well as being Moores’ last game in charge, it was also Tim Bresnan’s last game in an England shirt, but the Yorkshire all-rounder has revealed that the reason the match sticks in his mind is that he and his teammates knew their coach was on his way out before the game started.
“I remember it because in the bus on the way to the ground, somebody got a tweet and it said Peter Moores has been sacked as England coach, and he’s sat up the front of the bus,” Bresnan said on the Yorkshire Cricket: Covers Off podcast. “I’ll never forget it.”
Moores’ fate wasn’t discussed until the game was over, and Bresnan marvelled at how he managed to continue with his duties despite the circumstances. “All the lads knew that he’d got the sack, and he never mentioned it until the end of the game. I couldn’t believe how he had the professionalism to do that game properly, coach it, manage it, everything, was beyond me.”
