Wisden’s Royal London One-Day Cup Team of the Group Stage

by Frank Morrish 3 minute read

Frank Morrish picks out Wisden’s team of the Royal London One-Day Cup so far.

Alex Lees – Durham

7 matches, 472 runs at 78.66, SR: 90.07, 2 100s

Lees has failed to pass 50 just twice, forging a path at the top of the order for Durham, the competition’s most successful team thus far.

Graham Clark – Durham

7 matches, 560 runs at 93.33, SR: 102.56, 3 100s

Lees’ Durham opening partner makes the cut, partly because he’s struck three centuries and a fifty within his 560 runs, leading the way in the competition so far, and partly because there’s nothing like a domineering, intimidating partnership at the beginning of the innings to set the team up. Clarke and Lees certainly have that partnership.

Ryan Patel – Surrey

8 matches, 354 runs at 70.80, SR: 120.40, 2 100s

Surrey’s campaign has been hampered by rain, and it’s largely thanks to the efforts of Ryan Patel that they have managed to make the knockouts regardless. His 131 off 70 balls against Notts in a 30-over game, peppering a small Guildford boundary with 10 sixes, was one of the innings of the tournament, and he added another century to ace a chase against Derbyshire and confirm Surrey’s progression to the quarter-finals.

Lewis Hill – Leicestershire (wk)

8 matches, 322 runs at 46.00, SR: 94.42, 2 100s

The Leicestershire captain is just outside the top ten in the run charts but his case is advanced by his 107 in a steep chase against reigning champions Somerset to put his side on course for victory, and his 212-run partnership with Marcus Harris, albeit in a losing cause against Yorkshire. He takes the gloves in this XI.

Lewis Goldsworthy – Somerset

8 matches, 381 runs at 63.50, SR: 87.18; 3 wickets at 70, ER: 5.25

The Somerset youngster is yet to ton up, but with four centuries his consistency has belied his tender age. His left-arm spin is more than useful as well.

David Bedingham – Durham

5 matches, 236 runs at 47.20, SR: 140.47

Durham’s middle-order maestro. It’s the strike rate – north of 140 – which obtains his place in this XI. Durham’s success in this tournament also lends weight to his inclusion, and his three 50s have been part of that success.

Danny Lamb – Lancashire

7 matches, 10 wickets at 29.80, ER: 5.65; 147 runs at 49, SR: 133.63

The Lancashire all-rounder has picked up 10 wickets this competition, including an excellent 5-30 which blew away the Gloucestershire middle0order. There was also an unbeaten 86*, marshalling an exceptional lower order fightback to see Lancs home against Sussex.

Simon Harmer – Essex

8 matches, 15 wickets at 18.20, ER: 3.46

The South African off-spinner is the near the top of the wicket charts and has a brilliant economy rate too. The County Championship titan has proven he’s a force in white-ball cricket as well.

Ben Sanderson – Northamptonshire

8 matches, 15 wickets at 16.80, ER: 4.65

Another County Championship toiler who has turned up with the white ball. Only once has the metronomic right-armer taken less than two wickets in an innings.

Michael Hogan – Glamorgan

8 matches, 14 wickets at 10.92, ER: 3.06

Glamorgan’s stalwart has, at 40 years young, taken 14 wickets at an astonishing average of under 11, while also keeping the runs down as well.

Conor McKerr – Surrey

8 matches, 16 wickets at 18.50, ER: 6.50

The leading wicket-taker in the group stages, McKerr has been given licence by Surrey to not bother about conceding runs and focus on all-out attack. It’s worked a treat given the Oval-based side’s success so far.
