Watch: Dan Christian effects run out after colliding with batter to spark Spirit of Cricket debate

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Watch: Daniel Christian was at the centre of a Spirit of Cricket debate after controversially running on Ben Raine during a 2022 T20 Blast clash between Notts Outlaws and Durham on Friday.

Notts skipper Christian, bowling the third ball of the 18th over, nailed a yorker to Raine which the all-rounder could only dig out, with the ball rolling a short distance away. Attempting quick single, Raine started running towards the non-striker, only for Christian, charging towards the ball, to collide with the Durham batter.

The collision with Christian halted Raine’s progress, but with the non-striker already halfway down the track, he decided to try and get to the other end in any case. In the meantime, the Australia all-rounder picked up the ball, turned and aimed at the stumps on the non-striker’s end. His direct hit ran out Reine, who was left fuming at the dismissal.

The on-air commentator was left unimpressed by the run-out. “Normally, in cricket protocol, you just hold your hands up and you wouldn’t throw at the stumps. Ben Raine is unhappy, and I would say perhaps justifiably unhappy there.”

However, his co-commentator defended Christian by saying, “I don’t think there was anything wrong in it whatsoever. I saw nothing untoward. I saw the batsman looking where the ball was, getting his head up, Daniel Christian running directly towards the ball. They collide, they bounce off one another, and, to be fair, Ben Raine ran in a straight line to try and obscure the ball.”

Durham ended up scoring 183-8 in their 20 overs, which was chased down in 17 overs by Notts Outlaws.
