Watch: Leicestershire won their first fifty-over trophy in 38 years today (September 16) after an excellent final over from Josh Hull with just eight to defend completed their recovery from a first innings collapse.

Trent Bridge hosted the final of the One Day Cup final between Hampshire and Leicestershire, the latter getting off to a tricky start after electing to bat first. Leicestershire slipped to 19-4 and then 56-5 within the first 16 overs of the match. Captain Lewis Hill somewhat steadied the ship with 42 off 57 balls before Harry Swindells led a superb recovery. Swindells hit his maiden List A century batting at No.8 in his first game of the tournament. He put on 151 with Sam Evans for the seventh wicket as Leicestershire finished on 267-7.

However, despite managing to post a defendable score, Hampshire started strongly in their innings. They reached 117-2 before they lost three wickets for 19 runs in a middle-order collapse.

From there, Liam Dawson scored a solid half-century to take the chase right to the finish. With two overs to go, Hampshire needed 11 runs off 12 balls with Dawson unbeaten on 55 and Keith Barker at the crease. Just three runs came off Chris Wright’s last over, leaving Hull with eight to play with in his final.

After three singles came off the first three balls, disaster struck for Hampshire. Dawson tried to play a ramp shot off Hull’s fourth ball but didn’t get hold of the half-volley and gave an easy catch to Wright at fine-leg. With four needed, new batter Scott Currie could only manage a single off the next ball before Barker hit the final for another single.

As he played out to deep cover, Leicestershire celebrated their first fifty-over trophy in almost four decades.
