England wicketkeeper Ben Foakes took a superb catch to his right to dismiss Sir Alastair Cook in a high-stakes County Championship clash between two of the country’s leading sides.
Surrey entered the Division One clash at Chelmsford top of the table after three games with Essex just twelve points and three places behind them.
Essex skipper Tom Westley won the toss and chose to bat first against a Surrey side that included the fit-again Will Jacks.
Essex made an assured start with Cook and Nick Browne putting on 62 for the first wicket before Browne was out caught in the cordon off Gus Atkinson’s second delivery of the match. Cook, who scored briskly for his 51, fell 10 overs later also off the bowling of Atkinson.
The young seamer, who spent time over the winter playing in the ILT20 tournament, set the former England captain up, moving one delivery away from him and then seaming the next one into Cook, taking his inside edge before Foakes completed an excellent catch behind the stumps.
Foakes has made a good start to the season for the reigning champions. His first three scores of the summer read: 76, 103* and 39.
