Watch: Stuart Broad smashes ball to all parts in blistering County Championship blitz

by Wisden Staff 1 nminute read

Stuart Broad, who had reportedly contemplated retirement after being overlooked for the England squad that toured West Indies earlier this year, struck a fine 45* in only 27 deliveries, hitting the ball all around the park, in his first game of the 2022 County Championship for Nottinghamshire against Worcestershire.

Playing his first competitive game since the 2021/22 Ashes, Broad lit up Trent Bridge with a batting blitz. The quick, who had picked up one wicket in Worcestershire’s first innings, came in to bat at No.9 after Nottinghamshire had collapsed to 184-7 in response to the opponent’s first innings score of 159 and got going with a four off the 13th ball that he faced.

After hitting a boundary straight down the ground, Broad took the aerial route and smashed a leg-side six off Charlie Morris. The fast bowler hit another maximum five deliveries later, swatting a shorter ball over deep mid-wicket to race away to 31 in 19 deliveries.

Broad hit six fours and two sixes in his 27-ball stay at the crease, which helped his side to a total of 266, and allowed Nottinghamshire to take a 107-run lead.
