Watch: Sajid Khan runs Jayant Yadav out with brilliant direct hit from the deep

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Pakistan spinner Sajid Khan produced a moment of magic in the field on the final day of Somerset’s all important County Championship clash with Warwickshire with both sides in danger of relegation.

The game seemed destined to peter out into a draw as it entered the final session on day four. Somerset required seven wickets for victory while Warwickshire needed an unlikely 199 further runs with Sam Hain and skipper Will Rhodes at the crease.

Veteran seamer Jack Brooks blew the game open for the visitors, dismissing Rhodes and wicketkeeper Michael Burgess in consecutive deliveries to leave Warwickshire five wickets down early in the final session. Warwickshire’s plight was then worsened when overseas tweaker Khan ran India spinner Jayant Yadav out with a direct hit from the deep.

Yadav had been called through for a second run by his partner Hain after the 27-year-old Englishman turned a ball into the deep behind square on the leg-side. It was Hain’s call, he was running to what theoretically should have been danger end, but Khan sensed that Yadav was struggling to make his ground so instead threw the ball to the bowler’s end, hitting the stumps to run out Yadav and leave Warwickshire six down.

Khan’s run out wasn’t the first pivotal contribution by an overseas player in the match. Earlier, Mohammed Siraj claimed a first innings five-for for Warwickshire and dismissed Imam-ul-Haq out in both innings.
