Watch: India quick Mohammed Siraj continued his fine County Championship debut, claiming the wicket of Imam-ul-Haq early in the Somerset second innings.
Siraj is part of an influx of India players taking part in the final stages of this season’s County Championship, one that also includes his Warwickshire teammate Jayant Yadav and Glamorgan’s Shubman Gill.
Siraj’s Warwickshire debut comes at a crunch time for the Edgbaston-based county. Warwickshire currently lie in one of the two Division One relegation spots, a handful of points below their opponents Somerset.
The first two days of the fixture have been as evenly contested as the two sides’ positions in the table suggested. In the first innings, Somerset were bowled out for 219 thanks partly to Siraj picking up a five-wicket haul. Warwickshire got full value for Siraj, who has 40 Test wickets to his name, as the India quick delivered over a third of their first innings overs.
Warwickshire responded with 196, a score propelled by England prospect Sam Hain hitting 67. Somerset bowled Warwickshire out late on day two leaving Siraj with a short a new-ball burst which he used to dismiss Imam for the second time in the match, this time for a duck, having previously claimed his wicket for five in the Somerset first innings – on this occasion, Imam edged Siraj to second slip where Hain completed a comfortable catch. Somerset reached close on 13-2 – Yadav claimed the other wicket – with a lead of 36 in what is a huge game for both sides.
