Ravichandran Ashwin blew away the Somerset order as his Surrey side bowled out the Group Two table-toppers for just 69 at The Oval.
Ashwin, who bowled unchanged from one end in the second innings, ripped through Somerset, finishing with figures of 6-27. All 10 Somerset wickets fell to spin with Surrey left-arm spinner Dan Moriarty claiming the other four scalps.
All of Ashwin’s six wickets were of batsmen in the Somerset top eight. While he didn’t claim the prized wicket of New Zealander Devon Conway, he did account for former England wicketkeeper-batsman Steven Davies, young English prospect Tom Lammonby and county titan James Hildreth, who’d scored his 47th first-class hundred earlier in the fixture.
Despite the low score, Somerset remained well ahead in the contest. Their 69 left Surrey requiring 259 on the final day on a pitch that has given ever-increasing assistance to spin bowlers. In Surrey’s first innings, England spinner Jack Leach claimed impressive figures of 6-43 off 35.1 overs.
