Social cricket: Best reactions to England’s batting collapse & more

by Wisden Staff 5 minute read

The best of cricket on social media this week.

England’s depressingly inevitable collapse on day two in Barbados might not have been how the England team wanted to start 2019, but it did inspire some superb reactions on social media.

This heat map of England’s batsmen probably takes the biscuit.

When England were bowled out for 58 against New Zealand last year, the official England Twitter account Tweeted: “We’ve had a shocker.” Will Macpherson was quick to suggest that it could apply to England’s performance in Barbados.

Wisden Cricket Monthly columnist Jonathan Liew reminded fans that there was nothing unusual about England’s collapse.

It wasn’t the first time he’d commented on England’s ineptitude with the bat.

More positively, England fans were drooling over Shimron Hetmyer’s care-free approach at the crease. The young left-hander is certainly one to watch in 2019.

This was class from Vithushan Ehantharajah.

Waking up to news of another England collapse was music to the ears of Australian fans, including Mark Waugh.

Pre-collapse, Jimmy Anderson’s five-for meant that England’s great new ball pair of Anderson and Stuart Broad have now taken 1,000 wickets between them in Test cricket. Imagine dropping one of them!

West Indies announced their squad for the Barbados Test in interesting fashion.

And finally, retired rugby union player Richie McCaw turned his arm over to good effect in an exhibition match featuring All Blacks and Black Caps past and present. The two-time Rugby World Cup-winning captain took two wickets and a catch in his side’s win.
