Stokes, who anchored the innings after England lost three wickets in the first session, was dismissed for an 89-ball 41 moments after lunch. Facing Ravindra Jadeja, Stokes, who had scored two runs in 14 balls after play resumed, looked to play a big slog-sweep to ease the pressure.
He went down on one knee, took on the full-length ball on off-stump, and leaned in for a big hit towards the gap at mid-on. However, he didn’t middle it, the bat turning in his hand. It gave Bumrah, who was at long-on, enough time to run 20 metres to his left and hold onto an easy catch.
Following Stokes’ dismissal, England lost their last four wickets for 20 runs and were all out for 319. The visitors had started the day well-positioned at 207-2 but some brilliance from Kuldeep Yadav and later Mohammed Siraj saw them all out in just over a session. India now have a 126-run lead.
