Bangladesh have named a 17-member contingent spearheaded by Shakib Al Hasan for Asia Cup 2023. Here’s the full squad for ‘The Tigers’, including players list, injury news, reserves and replacements.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has named a 17-member squad on August 12 for the upcoming Asia Cup starting on August 30. Star performer Shakib Al Hasan has been named as the captain of the ODI team after a hiatus of 12 years. Already at the helm of affairs of the Test and T20I sides, Shakib is entrusted with the role after default captain Tamim Iqbal got sidelined due to a back injury. He has led his country in 47 ODIs so far.
Tanzid Hasan earned his maiden call-up on the back of his stellar form in the recently concluded ACC Men’s Emerging Asia Cup last month. He piled on 179 runs in his four outings, striking at 116.99, with three fifties to his name. The opener emerged as the highest run-getter for the Tigers in that tournament.
“Tanzid has been brilliant in the last couple of years and has played tremendously well in the recently concluded Emerging Asia Cup. He is an attacking opener and could put up runs briskly. We have high hopes for him,” BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin said.
Experienced all-rounder Mahmudullah has been left out again despite receiving a call-up in the fitness camp. The 218-ODI veteran was sacked from the squad following Bangladesh’s ODI series defeat against England in March.
“There was a long discussion regarding Mahmudullah. Team management has given a future plan. So considering all the factors, we have to exclude Mahmudullah,” Abedin justified Riyad’s snub.
Slotted in Group B, the Tigers will begin their continental event hunt on August 31 against co-host Sri Lanka at Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy. They will take on Afghanistan in their second game on September 3 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Update: Fast bowler Ebadot Hossain, who was originally picked in the squad, has been replaced by 20-year-old right-arm seamer Tanzim Sakib due to a knee injury.
