Flintoff joined England men’s white-ball backroom staff for their series against New Zealand over the summer, and has recently taken up a mentor role for the upcoming England Lions training camp.
Since retiring from cricket in 2009, Flintoff has hosted and appeared on various television shows – including working on The Hundred in 2021. He is continuing to recover from injuries he sustained in an accident while filming the BBC TV show Top Gear in December 2022.
Flintoff played over 200 times from England between 1998 and 2009, and was Test match captain for a brief period. He took 226 Test wickets and 169 ODI wickets, as well as scoring over 7,000 international runs across formats.
On taking up the role, Flintoff said: “I am excited to have been appointed Head Coach of the Northern Superchargers men’s team. Big thanks to Kirsty [Bashforth – Northern Superchargers chair] and Marcus [North] for trusting me with the team. My time with the England Men’s team has been a reminder of just how special cricket is to me, and I’m relishing the opportunity to be back amongst it, helping to guide the Superchargers team to success on the field while making memories off it and helping to take cricket to more people.
“The Superchargers have a great fan base who I cannot wait to meet and bring along with us this season. I’m looking forward to making Headingley my new home.”
Flintoff played for Lancashire for his entire county career, scoring over 9,000 first class runs for the club and taking 350 wickets.
Northern Superchargers men finished at the bottom of the table in the 2023 Hundred, having won two of their eight games. In the first three seasons of the competition, they haven’t finished higher than fifth.
