Hosein, playing for Quetta Gladiators, dismissed Aamer Jamal, Mehran Mumtaz and Luke Wood in successive balls during the 16th over of the Peshawar Zalmi innings to claim the first hat-trick of this year’s PSL.
Having conceded 22 runs in his first three overs, Hosain came on to complete his quota in the 16th over. He began by conceding a single to Rovman Powell before destroying the lower middle order in no time. The second ball of the over to Jamal was short and wide outside the off stump, but the batter only ended up under-edging it to the wicketkeeper.
On the next ball, Mumtaz dragged the short delivery onto the stumps, leaving Hosein on a hat-trick. He got to the feat after a sharp catch from Rilee Rossouw at slip, leaving the fielding side ecstatic and the Peshawar fans in tears.
Peshawar, who were well positioned at 147-4 in 13.3 overs at one stage, could not capitalise on that potential after Hosein’s final over. They finished their innings on 196-8, failing to reach the 200 mark they look set to make.
Only five other bowlers have taken a hat-trick in the PSL before: Mohammad Amir (2016), Junaid Khan (2018), Imran Tahir (2018), Mohammad Sami (2019) and Abbas Afridi (2023),
This was Hosein’s second hat-trick, with the West Indian first achieving the feat in December last year while playing in the Abu Dhabi T10 league. He picked up a five-wicket haul for New York Strikers against Morrisville Samp Army, which also included a hat-trick. However, it will not reflect in his career record as it was not an official game.
